People have used marijuana for a variety of purposes for at least 3000 years. In the last decade, the topic became highly controversial but attempts to justify its use become more and more intense in the last couple of decades.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two main ingredients in the marijuana plant that bring a wide range of effects. Both CBD and THC belong to a unique class of compounds known as cannabinoids. CBD has recently started to draw attention from the medical community, which seems to prefer CBD over THC.

Not long time ago, during the yearly tech conference Web Summit in Lisbon, the director of clinical research at Tilray Catherine Jacobson mentioned the rapid raise of discoveries on cannabis and its positive health effect on a variety of health conditions. “This has never happened before – an essential medical product happened to be available to patients long before it became a medical product”, she said.

What is even more exciting in her opinion is the access to patients’ data before the clinical trials have been completed.

“Cannabis is simply unique because you can treat a variety of symptoms with the same active ingredient”, she pointed. In addition, she mentioned that the use of marijuana for medical purposes is extremely safe compared to other medications because the difference between the therapeutic dose and the toxic dose is large. “It’s very hard to make a mistake”, she added at the end of her speech on Web Summit 2017.

Of course, all the positive and negative effects of cannabis must be explored and tested. This is challenging because of legal restrictions and variability in the concentration of the plant’s psychoactive chemicals. However, hundreds of studies have been conducted for the last decades. The plant has been tested on different conditions and it has shown numerous reactions.
We have carefully selected a list of some of the most interesting clinical trials and their results through the time. Have a look and share your thoughts in the comments!
